Tesco Mobile has fired a broadside at rival UK carriers, with the news that it is offering super fast 4G to its customers for no extra cost
The offer, which goes live on January 30th, applies to new and existing customers on pay monthly and SIM only contracts.
Currently, Tesco Mobile levies a £2.50 per month premium for customers who add 4G data to their calls and texts bundle.
In keeping with Tesco Mobile’s positioning as a 'value' network, the cheapest Tesco Mobile 4G SIM only tariff will be priced £7.50 per month. That gets you 250 minutes, 5,000 texts and 500MB data per month.
Simon Groves, Chief Marketing Officer of Tesco Mobile, said: “After giving customers the chance to try 4G at their own pace with our flexible 4G tariffs, we’ve seen people really benefit from what it has to offer.
“Customers should be able to expect more from their mobile network, so as we see demand for 4G become more widespread, we wanted to take a different approach.
“Introducing free 4G is a clear example of our intention to provide all of our customers with the very best at no extra cost.”
Tesco has also confirmed plans to offer 4G data bundles to pay as you go customers and will be adding 4G-capable smartphones to its handset range, including the Motorola Moto X and Sony Z1 Compact.
As a MVNO (that’s a mobile virtual network operator), Tesco Mobile shares O2’s network. That means Tesco Mobile 4G will be available in the same locations as O2’s 4G service.
Cities covered currently include London, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bradford, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Sheffield and Nottingham.
O2 intends to have extended its 4G reach so that by 2015 it is able to offer indoor 4G coverage to 98% of the UK population.
